The Administrator of the Ghana Medical Trust Fund, Adjoa Obuobia Darko-Opoku, has outlined progress made by the Fund in strengthening Ghana’s healthcare system through infrastructure development, equipment supply and medical training initiatives.

Presenting a breakdown of ongoing interventions, she disclosed that the Trust Fund is supporting the construction of three state-of-the-art cardiology centres at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital and Tamale Teaching Hospital in strategic partnership with the Ministry of Health.

According to her, the centres are designed to significantly expand Ghana’s national capacity for cardiology and vascular interventions.

She explained that each facility will be equipped with catheterisation laboratories, hybrid theatres, recovery wards, intensive care units, consulting rooms, dedicated oxygen systems, onsite pharmacies and diagnostic laboratories to support advanced cardiac care.

Adjoa Darko-Opoku further noted that the Trust Fund has facilitated the distribution of critical medical equipment to selected hospitals across the country.

The beneficiary facilities include the Sunyani Teaching Hospital, Holy Family Hospital in Techiman and the Volta Regional Hospital in Hohoe, which have received dialysis machines, ICU beds and patient monitors to improve critical care delivery.

On medical training, she said the Trust Fund has entered into strategic partnerships with the Ghana College of Physicians and Surgeons to expand specialist training centres and decentralise postgraduate medical education across the country.

She indicated that the interventions form part of broader efforts to improve access to quality healthcare, strengthen specialist services and enhance Ghana’s overall health infrastructure.
