FDA Arrests Two Over Falsified ‘Dr Alfred Capsules’ Containing Sildenafil

The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) has arrested two people over the manufacture and distribution of falsified ‘Dr Alfred Capsules’, a dietary supplement marketed for male vitality on social media.

The FDA said laboratory tests confirmed that the falsified capsules contained Sildenafil citrate, a prescription-only medicine that was not declared on the product label.

Sildenafil citrate is the active pharmaceutical ingredient in medicines such as Viagra. It is a prescription medicine used primarily to treat erectile dysfunction (ED) in men.

The Authority said the product had not been registered by the FDA and was being produced in unauthorised, unregulated and unhygienic environments.

The suspects, identified following regulatory intelligence and enforcement operations in Accra and Suhum, are currently on police enquiry bail and assisting with investigations.

The FDA stressed that the genuine ‘Dr Alfred Capsules’, manufactured in Indonesia and registered in Ghana as a food supplement, do not contain Sildenafil citrate.

It urged the public to exercise caution when purchasing the product through social media and report suspected falsified medicines and food supplements.
