The Wellness Clinic of Ga North Municipal Hospital has commemorated this year’s World Hypertension Day with members of the Adehyemba Fun Club during a health and wellness exercise held at the Aburi Botanical Gardens in the Eastern Region.

The event, held under the theme, “Let’s Check BPs to Save Lives,” brought together health professionals, club members, and wellness advocates to promote awareness on hypertension and the importance of regular blood pressure monitoring.

Activities for the day began at Ayi Mensa, where participants embarked on an endurance walk and mountain climb before proceeding to the Aburi Botanical Gardens for health education, blood pressure screening, and recreational activities.

Officials from the Wellness Clinic, led by Ms. Comfort Chelsy Gakpo and three other health professionals, educated participants on the dangers of hypertension, commonly known as high blood pressure, and encouraged them to prioritize preventive healthcare.

According to the team, hypertension continues to be one of the leading causes of stroke, heart disease, kidney complications, and sudden deaths globally. They noted that many individuals are unaware they are living with the condition because it often develops without obvious symptoms.

Participants were therefore encouraged to routinely check their blood pressure, maintain healthy eating habits, reduce salt intake, engage in regular exercise, avoid smoking and excessive alcohol consumption, and seek early medical attention when necessary.

The Adehyemba Fun Club, an Accra-based wellness and social group led by Mr. Oppong, actively participated in the exercise and described the initiative as both refreshing and educational. Members noted that the mountain climb and long walk highlighted the importance of physical activity in maintaining good cardiovascular health.

Some participants who underwent blood pressure screening during the event were also advised to seek further medical evaluation and counseling.

The serene atmosphere of the Aburi Botanical Gardens provided an ideal environment for relaxation, physical activity, and discussions on healthy living, reinforcing the connection between physical wellness and mental health.

The exercise forms part of Ga North Municipal Hospital’s ongoing efforts to promote preventive healthcare and increase awareness on non-communicable diseases within the municipality and beyond.

World Hypertension Day is observed annually to educate the public on the risks associated with high blood pressure and to encourage people to know their blood pressure status regularly in order to prevent avoidable complications and deaths.
