President John Dramani Mahama has commissioned a new state-of-the-art Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory at the National Cardiothoracic Centre of the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, describing it as a symbol of restoration, renewal and progress after the previous facility was destroyed by fire.

Funded through the Ghana Medical Trust Fund, the new laboratory is expected to improve Ghana’s capacity to diagnose and treat complex cardiovascular conditions, including coronary artery disease, structural heart disease and peripheral vascular diseases.

President Mahama said the facility goes beyond replacing what was lost, noting that it represents a stronger commitment to improving specialist healthcare delivery in Ghana.

He recalled commissioning the first cardiac catheterization laboratory at Korle Bu in 2017, which enabled thousands of patients to receive critical heart procedures locally instead of travelling abroad.

The President also announced plans to establish comprehensive cardiology centres at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, Tamale Teaching Hospital, Effia Nkwanta Hospital and Ho Teaching Hospital to expand access to specialised cardiac care nationwide.

He further disclosed that government is advancing plans for a new maternity block at Korle Bu and the demolition of the ageing Guggisberg building, which he described as unsafe for mothers and healthcare workers.

President Mahama said the success of the new facility would ultimately be measured by the lives saved and the hope restored to patients and families across the country.
