The Administrator of the Ghana Medical Trust Fund, Adjoa Obuobia Darko-Opoku has announced that the Fund will officially commence a nationwide patient support programme in June 2026 following the completion of a pilot phase earlier this year.
According to the Administrator, the Board of Trustees approved a pilot programme involving 50 patients in February 2026 to test the Fund’s systems for patient onboarding, treatment monitoring and claims management ahead of the nationwide rollout.
The beneficiaries, drawn from different parts of the country, received financial support for a range of critical medical procedures, including heart surgeries, brain surgeries, chemotherapy, radiotherapy and orthopaedic surgeries.
The Administrator disclosed that more than GH¢4.8 million has so far been spent on the treatment of patients under the pilot initiative.
The patients, aged between six months and 85 years, were treated across 11 hospitals nationwide.
The nationwide programme is expected to expand access to financial support for patients requiring specialised and high-cost medical treatment as part of efforts to strengthen healthcare delivery in the country.
