The Ghana Association of Medical Laboratory Scientists (GAMLS) has announced the observance of its 2026 Professionalism Month, scheduled to take place throughout March 2026, with activities aimed at strengthening ethics, quality standards and leadership within the profession.
In a memo dated February 13, 2026, and signed by the General Secretary on behalf of the National Executive Council, the Association outlined a comprehensive programme under the theme: “Professional Integrity, Quality Systems, and Leadership in Modern Laboratory Science Practice.”
According to GAMLS, the initiative seeks to promote ethical practice among medical laboratory scientists, reinforce adherence to professional standards and ISO 15189 principles, enhance patient safety and quality laboratory services, build public trust in the profession, and mentor young professionals and students.
The month-long programme will begin with an official launch and public awareness campaign in the first week. Activities will include a welcome address by the GAMLS President, a keynote presentation on professionalism in healthcare delivery, media engagements, and public sensitisation through radio, television and social media platforms.
Week Two will focus on ethics, competence and professional development, featuring Continuing Professional Development (CPD) workshops and seminars on ethical dilemmas in laboratory practice, professional accountability, ISO 15189 and quality culture, data integrity and patient confidentiality. An interactive panel discussion will examine challenges affecting professionalism in Ghana and propose strategies for improvement.
The third week will centre on quality improvement and community engagement, with forums addressing professional behaviour in error prevention, communication and teamwork in laboratories, and continuous quality improvement. A mentorship session will also be held to provide guidance for students and early-career professionals.
The programme will conclude in the fourth week with a professional pledge ceremony and a closing event outlining the way forward.
Throughout the month, GAMLS will sustain weekly professionalism messages, workplace ethical reminders and posters, professional dress and identity days, and member spotlight stories.
GAMLS expressed confidence that the initiative will reinforce professional ethics, promote leadership accountability, and align members with contemporary standards in medical laboratory science, including quality management systems and patient-centred care. Members have been encouraged to actively participate in all activities to help promote a positive image of the profession.
