Kumasi: Popular Chop Bar Shut Down Over Serious Public Health Risks

The Alpha and Omega Chop Bar in Krobo Odumase, Kumasi, has been ordered closed by city authorities following inspections that revealed serious sanitation lapses posing risks to public health.

During an inspection led by the Mayor of Kumasi, Richard Kwasi Ofori Boadi Agyemang, officials found filth and untreated liquid waste from the eatery being discharged directly into nearby drains, worsening flooding and drainage issues in the area.

As part of enforcement measures, the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) served sanitation abatement notices on the chop bar and seven other businesses operating under unsanitary conditions.

The operators were directed to take immediate corrective actions to meet approved environmental and public health standards.

Mayor Agyemang stressed that the Assembly will not hesitate to apply sanctions against businesses that flout sanitation laws. “Public health cannot be compromised. Food vendors and business owners must comply with existing regulations or face consequences,” he warned.

The closure is part of the KMA’s broader campaign to maintain a cleaner and safer metropolis, particularly in high-traffic commercial areas where poor waste management has long contributed to clogged drains, flooding, and health risks such as cholera and other sanitation-related diseases.

The Mayor urged residents and businesses to cooperate fully with authorities in efforts to protect public health and the environment.
