KATH Suspends New Emergency Admissions as A&E Centre Exceeds Capacity

The Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) has temporarily suspended new admissions at its Accident and Emergency (A&E) Centre after the facility exceeded its capacity due to a surge in patients.

In a statement signed by the Head of the Public Affairs Unit, Kwame Frimpong, management said the A&E Centre, which was originally designed to accommodate 37 patients, currently has 61 patients admitted across its critical wards, with an additional 34 patients waiting for admission.

The hospital said it would be unable to admit new emergency cases for the next 24 hours as medical staff work to clear the backlog and attend to patients already receiving care.

KATH has therefore advised the public to seek treatment at other hospitals in the Ashanti Region until the situation improves.

Management said it is engaging the Ashanti Regional Health Directorate to coordinate support from other healthcare facilities in the region while efforts are made to ease pressure on the hospital’s emergency centre.

The hospital, however, clarified that its neonatal, paediatric and obstetric emergency services remain unaffected by the temporary suspension.

KATH indicated that the situation is being reviewed regularly and assured the public that new emergency admissions will resume once conditions at the A&E Centre stabilize.
