The Ministry of Health (MoH) is intensifying Ghana’s efforts to eliminate onchocerciasis, positioning a new partnership with the Noor Dubai Foundation as a critical intervention to sustain progress amid global funding constraints.

In a meeting with Hon. Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, Health Minister, the CEO of the Noor Dubai Foundation, Dr. Manal Taryam, outlined ongoing and planned interventions, stating that the Foundation, which is part of the Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Global Initiatives, has been working in Ghana since 2009, primarily in cataract surgeries in Tamale, with a target of reaching up to 5,000 beneficiaries annually.

She disclosed that the Foundation is now expanding its scope beyond eye care to support the elimination of onchocerciasis, with personal backing from the Ruler of Dubai.

Akandoh, on his part, directed technical teams to fast-track all processes related to the collaboration, stressing that timelines must be strictly adhered to in order to meet national elimination targets.

According to him, eliminating operational delays and strengthening coordination will be essential to achieving full coverage.

The Minister stressed that Ghana’s progress in tackling neglected tropical diseases makes it a strong partner and expressed confidence that, with coordinated efforts and sustained will, elimination of onchocerciasis is achievable by 2030.
