Deputy Minister for Health, Prof. Dr. Grace Ayensu-Danquah, has underscored the need to invest in Ghana’s nursing and midwifery workforce, describing nurses and midwives as the backbone of primary healthcare and essential to improving health outcomes.

She made the remarks while serving as the Special Guest of Honour at the 2026 Annual General Meeting of the West African Postgraduate College of Nursing and Midwives (WAPCNM), Ghana Chapter.

The meeting was held under the theme, “Advancing Nursing and Midwifery Workforce Sustainability for Stronger Primary Healthcare Systems.”

According to Prof. Ayensu-Danquah, strengthening the country’s health system requires sustained investment in nurses and midwives through specialist training, research, digital innovation and strategic partnerships.

“The truth is simple: you cannot have quality healthcare without empowered nurses and midwives. They are the backbone of primary healthcare and the future of better health outcomes for all,” she said.

She noted that discussions at the meeting focused on building a resilient healthcare system by expanding specialist training, promoting research and innovation, and strengthening leadership and collaboration within the health sector.

The Deputy Minister commended leaders in the nursing and midwifery profession for their commitment to advancing healthcare delivery and shaping the future of primary healthcare in Ghana and the sub region.
