The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) has assured the public that Nestlé infant formula products sold through legitimate retail channels in Ghana are safe, despite reports of a recall of certain Nestlé baby food products in some European countries.
In a press release dated January 8, 2026, the FDA said its attention had been drawn to media reports concerning a voluntary recall in parts of Europe, including France, Germany, Austria, Denmark, Italy and Sweden, due to possible contamination with cereulide toxin.
The Authority clarified that Ghana is not affected by the recall. According to the FDA, none of the batches involved in the European recall were distributed in Ghana.
The FDA explained that cereulide is a toxin produced by certain strains of Bacillus cereus bacteria, which can cause symptoms such as nausea, vomiting and stomach cramps. The toxin cannot be destroyed by boiling water during formula preparation, which prompted the precautionary recall in Europe.
However, the FDA stated that all Nestlé infant formula products sold in Ghana through official channels are duly registered and sourced from non-affected manufacturing facilities.
Specifically, the FDA said SMA infant formula sold in Ghana is manufactured at Nestlé’s Tuas Factory in Singapore, while NAN infant formula is produced at Nestlé’s Nantli Factory in Mexico, and not in the European facilities affected by the recall.
The FDA-listed registered products in Ghana include the SMA Gold range manufactured in Singapore and the NAN Optipro range manufactured in Mexico.
As a precaution, the Authority said it has requested specific affected batch numbers from Nestlé to enable enhanced market surveillance. Inspectors have also been deployed to retail outlets, pharmacies and distribution points to verify product sources and identify any unofficial imports.
The FDA further indicated that surveillance has been intensified at all ports of entry to prevent affected products from entering Ghana through informal channels.
The Authority urged the public to continue purchasing infant formula only from authorised retailers and assured consumers that it remains vigilant in safeguarding public health.
