Chief Executive Officer of the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA), Dr. Victor Bampoe, has briefed Vice President Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang on recent gains in Ghana’s health sector, including significant improvements under the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS).
Dr. Bampoe said NHIS coverage increased from 58 per cent in 2024 to 66.2 per cent in 2025, translating into about 22.3 million Ghanaians currently covered by the Scheme.
He attributed the progress to reforms within the NHIA and the leadership of the Minister for Health, Hon. Kwabena Mintah Akandoh.
According to him, the NHIA has also achieved prompt payment of claims on a monthly basis, a development he described as unprecedented.
He noted that the Authority is working closely with key stakeholders, including the Ghana Health Service (GHS), the Christian Health Association of Ghana (CHAG) and the Ghana Medical Trust Fund (Mahama Cares) to provide Free Primary Healthcare and support for the management of non-communicable diseases.
During the meeting, the Vice President encouraged the NHIA to communicate its achievements more effectively to the public and urged stronger action to curb illegal payments demanded from patients at some health facilities.
Dr. Bampoe expressed appreciation to the Vice President for her advice, guidance and words of wisdom, reaffirming the Authority’s commitment to improving access to quality and affordable healthcare for all Ghanaians.
