The Out-Patient Department (OPD) this morning hosted the launch of the January Cervical Cancer Awareness Month, marking the start of activities aimed at increasing public education, early detection, and prevention of cervical cancer among women.

The launch brought together health workers, patients, and members of the hospital community, who were encouraged to actively participate in the campaign and help spread awareness about the importance of regular screening.

Speaking during the brief launch, health officials emphasized that cervical cancer remains one of the leading but preventable causes of cancer-related deaths among women, especially in low- and middle-income countries. Early detection through routine screening, they noted, significantly improves treatment outcomes and saves lives.

As part of the awareness campaign, women in the reproductive age group were strongly encouraged to undergo cervical cancer screening using the Pap smear test. The service is readily available at the hospital’s Family Planning Unit, where trained staff are on standby to provide professional and confidential care.

Agnes Mantey, together with her dedicated team at the Family Planning Unit, has assured the public of their readiness to receive clients and support women who wish to take advantage of the screening service throughout the month.

Health officials urged all women to prioritize their health by attending screening sessions, reminding the public that cervical cancer is highly preventable when detected early. The campaign will continue with education sessions and client engagement activities aimed at promoting women’s health and wellbeing.
