Vice President Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyeman has met with the leadership of the West African College of Surgeons (WACS) to discuss initiatives aimed at strengthening specialist healthcare delivery in Ghana.
The meeting, led by Professor Afua Hesse, focused on preparations for a major volunteer medical outreach programme expected to attract between 1,500 and 2,000 delegates, who will provide free medical services to patients across the country.
Discussions also covered plans to relaunch the College’s Endowment Fund, which will be activated across participating countries during an upcoming gala. The fund is intended to support the training of medical specialists in Ghana and across the West African sub-region.

In addition, the Vice President and the WACS leadership explored efforts to establish a medical simulation centre, aimed at enhancing specialist training and ensuring Ghana remains competitive in global medical education and practice.
Professor Opoku-Agyeman commended the College for its commitment to improving healthcare outcomes and praised the high quality of specialist training provided by WACS.

She stressed the importance of continuously improving training standards, expanding access to healthcare through multiple service delivery channels, and strengthening collaboration among health institutions.
She reaffirmed Government’s recognition of the critical role of specialist training in building a resilient healthcare system and called for sustained partnership to ensure Ghana keeps pace with global standards while improving healthcare delivery for all citizens.
