An electrical fire outbreak at the Ga North Municipal Hospital, Ofankor in Accra on Wednesday sparked brief panic among patients and health workers, temporarily disrupting services at the facility. The incident, which reportedly occurred within one of the hospital’s electrical sections, was swiftly contained by staff before firefighters arrived on the scene.
According to eyewitnesses, smoke began billowing from a section of the hospital building, prompting an immediate emergency response from health personnel on duty. In a swift and coordinated effort described by witnesses as “fierce and determined,” staff members worked together to control and quench the flames within approximately 20 minutes, preventing the fire from spreading to critical areas of the hospital.

The unexpected outbreak led to moments of confusion as patients and some staff were seen running helter-skelter to safety. Two patients are said to have collapsed during the evacuation process, reportedly due to shock and distress. However, hospital authorities later confirmed that both individuals were stabilized promptly and have since been discharged in good condition.
Firefighters from the Ghana National Fire Service arrived shortly after the fire had been subdued to assess the situation and ascertain the extent and cause of the incident. Their presence helped ensure that there was no risk of reignition and that the facility was safe for continued operations in unaffected areas.

Senior officials, including the Municipal Chief Executive, the Medical Superintendent of the hospital, as well as Regional and District Directors of Health Services, visited the facility soon after the incident. They commended staff for their rapid response and assured the public that patient safety remains the hospital’s top priority.
As a precautionary measure, Out-Patient Department (OPD) services have temporarily been put on hold while assessments and safety checks continue. Meanwhile, in-patients currently admitted at the hospital are continuing to receive treatment under close supervision.

Authorities have indicated that investigations are ongoing to determine the exact cause of the electrical fault. The hospital management has also assured the public that measures will be strengthened to prevent a recurrence and that normal services will resume once full safety clearance is granted.
