Land preparation has begun for the construction of a 400-bed Mother and Child Block at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital in Accra.

The new facility is expected to replace the hospital’s existing Maternity Unit and provide specialised healthcare services for mothers and children.

The proposed block will include obstetrics and gynaecology wards, labour and delivery suites, operating theatres, a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), High Dependency Unit (HDU) and Intensive Care Unit (ICU).

It will also house an IVF and Assisted Reproductive Technology Centre, antenatal and postnatal clinics, fertility and reproductive health clinics, breastfeeding and family planning units, and an Emergency Obstetric Care Unit.

Other planned facilities include diagnostic imaging and laboratory departments, blood bank and pharmacy facilities, a Central Sterile Services Department, physiotherapy and rehabilitation units, as well as teaching, research and conference facilities.

The project is part of efforts to upgrade health infrastructure at Korle Bu Teaching Hospital and expand specialised maternal and child healthcare services.
