AngloGold Ashanti Iduapriem Commissions US$1.1m Neonatal Intensive Care Unit At Tarkwa Hospital

AngloGold Ashanti Iduapriem Mine has commissioned a US$1.1 million, 60-bed Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at the Tarkwa Municipal Hospital to strengthen specialised healthcare services for newborns in the Tarkwa Nsuaem Municipality and surrounding districts.

The newly commissioned facility is designed to provide specialised care for critically ill and premature newborns, offering a dedicated environment equipped to support babies who require intensive medical attention after birth.

The investment is expected to expand access to neonatal healthcare in the municipality and neighbouring communities while strengthening the capacity of the Tarkwa Municipal Hospital to manage complicated newborn cases.

The facility forms part of AngloGold Ashanti Iduapriem Mine’s broader commitment to supporting healthcare infrastructure in its host communities through partnerships aimed at improving social outcomes.

According to the company, the NICU reflects its purpose of “Mining to Empower People and Advance Societies” and represents an investment in healthcare infrastructure intended to create lasting value for communities around its operations.

The facility will provide a specialised setting for the treatment and monitoring of premature and critically ill newborns, potentially improving access to timely neonatal care for families who might otherwise have to travel to other facilities for specialised services.

The commissioning brought together representatives of the Ghana Health Service, government institutions, the Minerals Commission, traditional authorities, Tarkwa Municipal Hospital, healthcare professionals, mining companies, host communities and the media, among other stakeholders.

AngloGold Ashanti Iduapriem expressed appreciation to the stakeholders and partners who supported the development and commissioning of the facility.

The company said the investment demonstrates the importance of collaboration between mining companies, government institutions, healthcare providers and communities in strengthening local healthcare systems.

The commissioning of the NICU adds to efforts to improve maternal and newborn healthcare services in the Tarkwa area, with the facility expected to provide specialised support for newborns requiring intensive care.
